3 keys that unlock growth

I’m stuck in this rut. Constantly I’m standing stranded behind bars barely breathing. My life is fixed. I’m living the same story recorded on repeat. In this cell I just want to yell. Stuck with people of like mind, my destiny has been set. I look in the mirror and I’m covered in stickers stuck to me in sympathy professionally. BIPOLOR. ADDICT. ADHD. CRIMINAL. THIEF. I want to wander but I wonder if they arrest me to keep my mind arrested? If I stay here I have to believe these labels. They're staples for my kind. My kind? Wait. Rewind. We all come into this world crying and we all leave alone. If this is it true, what if the power of choice is mine to choose. I can’t stay here anymore. My mind is set to change. This is where I set my mind. A new mindset.

"Don't believe what you believe just 'cause that's how they raised you
Think your own thoughts, don't let them do it for you
Say you want a drink, don't wait for people to pour it on you."

-NF (Remember this)

Carol Dweck, author and professor of psychology at Stanford University teaches about two mindsets. Fixed and growth. I, 100% agree with this philosophy. I've experienced this transition previously to reading her work. She says "In a fixed mindset, people believe their basic qualities, like their intelligence or talent, are simply fixed traits. They spend their time documenting their intelligence or talent instead of developing them. They also believe that talent alone creates success—without effort."(mindset.com) In contrast a growth mind set is free from these limiting beliefs. We break out of that cell and remove our labels. If we want to build our intelligence we learn. If we want to be stronger, we train. If we want to build virtue, we don't beg for it, we work for it.

"Listen, yeah everybody wants change
Don't nobody wanna change though
Don't nobody wanna pray
Till they got something to pray for
Now everybody's gon' die
But don't everybody live though"

-NF (Oh Lord)

Staying in that fixed mindset puts us in a defensive position. When adversity comes we look at it as an attack against our character, then respond trying to prove our adequacy. This is the way I am, this is why it's okay. It isn't easy to view that attack as advice. That maybe we can fortify our character against that stress. Something also changes though. The way we use the time we've been given. We elect to use it not solely for our amusement and entertainment. Instead of spending time, we start investing it. This investment is one of the #1 best decisions I believe we can make.

Here are 3 keys which unlocked my cell.

#1 Our brain is like a muscle. It gets stronger with challenge. If we constantly avoid it we don't grow. I tell my son, "Hard work beats talent when talent doesn't work hard." People who are talented, I've often noticed quit when things get tough. They never develop the skill of persistence. Those who work for their skill develop this quality and mow through obstacles because they've made a habit of it.

#2 Love the process and the result is a bonus. Ray Lewis says, "Effort is between you and you." I love this. Honestly investing 100% of your effort constantly is infinitely easier when you love it. Simply stated writing a best seller is most often done by someone who doesn't HATE to write. It is done by someone who loves this process.

#3 If you aren't failing, you aren't trying. Failure is a good thing when it is learned from. It is part of the process. Search for it, do not avoid it.

In our hands are keys. The funny thing about keys is that they are useless with out the proper lock. I finally unlocked the door to my cell. I have a little more freedom. There are more doors though. I'm still trying to figure out how big the mansion of my mind is. All these keys. All these doors. I'm learning which keys go to which lock. Every time I find one my freedom is expanded. You have your keys. It's nice to have someone tell you which ones go to which door. I'll help if I can. Feel free to reach out!
